Mashin Eiyūden Wataru is adapted from the anime 1988 mecha anime series of the same name (Spirit Hero Wataru). The story is about a 9-year-old boy named Wataru Ikusabe who is magically transported to a magical realm by a magical dragon named Ryujinmaru - this realm is known as Soukaizan, which he is supposed to save from an evil, magical, demonic ruler. Mashin Hero Wataru is a mecha multimedia franchise originally created by Sunrise and Red Entertainment. Hudson later released in 1990 another game for the Famicom based on the franchise titled Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru Gaiden Famicom, which is a role-playing video game. A significantly altered version of the game with all references to the anime removed was released as "Keith Courage in Alpha Zones" as a pack-in game for the TurboGrafx-16 console in North America.
